Compact digital cameras offer a slim design, but still come packed with features like video recording and touch-screen displays. These high-tech and compact digital cameras offer a winning combination and have both the function you need with the portability you desire.

One camera that offers such functions and features is the Nikon CoolPix S710. This compact digital camera is just the right size to slide into a pocket, yet is still able to capture extremely high quality images in high resolution.

The CoolPix S710 has a contemporary stainless steel casing that not only looks good but also protects the camera. Aside from its size it also offers the standard compact camera design and arrangement regarding the lens, which appears off centre at the front, with the power button situated on top and the controls which appear on the rear of the camera, for easy user access.

The Nikon CoolPix has an impressive 14.5 Megapixel Image Sensor, a 3.6x Optical Zoom, an Optical Image Stabilization and 3 Inch High Resolution LCD Monitor features.

This particular camera will allow you to both crop and edit your photos and the addition of the high resolution sensor enables new digital camera users more leeway when it comes to capturing the image.

The 3.6x optical zoom NIKKOR lens has a 28mm wide-angle capability making it great for action shots and subjects that are far away.

The high performance optical lens shift image stabilizer aids in reducing the appearance of blurry images, which are often caused by shaky hands and unsteady surfaces, so you do not need to worry about reduction in resolution or loss of quality when using this particular feature.

The 3 inch high resolution LCD monitor makes it a simple task to view pictures that have previously been taken and because of the wide viewing display, photos can be viewed with a group of friends.

Another bonus of the Nikon CoolPix is the anti-reflective coating, which makes it easier to use on sunny days when the sunlight is at its harshest. This is an especially useful feature if you are looking for a handset to take abroad.

This particular camera can be purchased from the online department store Very.co.uk where it appears on half price offer. The model is available in an array of colours, including a pretty pink.

What says about this camera:
1. There are already great reviews out about Canon’s A590is. I’d like to add that I bought this camera just before a 2-week trip to China. Well, it performed like a charm and I couldn’t be more happy with my purchase, especially for such an affordable camera that has so many features. On the second day of my trip I was fumbling with the camera and dropped it from a height of 4 feet onto concrete. My heart was in my throat. Everyone stared. For the remainder of the trip the camera was just fine; not even a crack or scratch. I’m amazed. And because I had almost no time to look through the camera manual before I started taking photos, I’ll add that this camera is very user-friendly and easy to figure out right out of the box. I especially like the image stabilization and video capture features. I was also pleasantly surprised by the long battery life. I took about 700 pictures on one set of batteries. Overall, a great camera.

2. This camera is really nice. I like that you can add external lenses (sold seperately) to the camera. If you are interested in this option, check out the bundle package from 49 St. Photo (sold through Amazon) that includes two lenses and lots of other goodies for only $100 more.

My favorite features of this camera include manual mode (or shutter or aperature priorty), auto rotates pictures, long battery life, great movie quality w/ sound, can turn off digital zoom, has an easy mode, face detection is cool, and you can add an external lens.

Cons to the camera include a little bit bulky, slow recharge time after each picture, and that’s about it. I never write reviews but I felt I needed to for this since I liked it so much.

Expert’s review of this camera here or here

What says about this camera:

1. Like most people, I did lot of research (online and visits to retailers) before deciding on the Canon SD770is. If you’re considering a quality, compact digital camera, there simply is no better choice than the Canon SD770is – and go with the black color which features a black circle in front, a slightly darker body color, and a black wrist strap instead of the silver strap that comes with the silver version. I considered the SD790is with the 3″ screen, but it’s slightly bigger and heavier and only came in silver. The 770 is the successor to the 750 (one of Canon’s best digital cameras), and adds image stabilization, a better LCD screen, 10 megapixels, and better battery pack. I won’t go into all the specs, because you can read that anywhere online, but the diminutive size makes the 770 very convenient to carry everywhere and the pictures are absolutely great. What more could you ask for? I admit I am biased towards Canon as every year or two I upgrade to another Canon, but they simply make the best digital cameras on the market. Save some time, take advantage of my extensive research, and get yourself the Canon SD770is…and click away.

2. I finally took the plunge and replaced my old digital camera with a modern image-stabilized one. What a difference! Shots that would have been just plain impossible are now easy. For example, I went to the Air and Space museum at Dulles Airport and got great shots of the planes and the space shuttle. At first the shots would not come out with the flash. No problem, I just turned off the flash and, thanks to the image stabilization, was able to take a hand-held shot without blurriness. The only way I could get shot like that with my old camera was to use a tripod. I specifically picked this model over the 790 due to the viewfinder, sometimes it’s just too hard to see an LCD screen in bright sunlight. I have not needed the viewfinder yet but am looking forward to using it. I think it’s worth giving up the half-inch of screen size to have a real viewfinder.

Expert’s review of this camera here, here or here

What says about this camera:

1. I have had many digital cameras. At the moment I also own 3 Nikon SLRs, the D40/80/300.
When I am out walking the dog in the desert, the L18 is the camera I usually take. Picture quality is fine, and the really wonderful thing is you can use AA NiMh rechargeable batteries in it. Battery life is good.
For the price this is a great little light weight camera.

2. I recently had the L12, went on vacation and well they don’t take well to getting in swimming pools! So I purchased this one as it’s replacement. I love it even more! Has a lot more features and is very easy to use. It is very compact and the 3″ lcd screen is great. The only think I don’t like is they put the SD card slot in the battery compartment. I like it better with it’s own compartment, I take hundreds of pictures a month and I find it easier to take the card out of the camera and use a card reader on my computer, instead of connecting the camera to the computer.
Over all I recommend this camera to all levels of camera users!

What says about this camera:

1. This camera is impossible to beat at this price. I won’t write a lengthy review, but, you can set this camera in fully automatic mode and hand it to a “point and shoot” person, and they will obtain fantastic results. For the amateur photographer, this has all of the bells and whistles, what I love is I can reset the camera rapidly for multiple shots of the same scene on very different settings. Married with a decent photo program on your computer, it is possible to achieve professional results.

Many reviews say, get this with the stabilization lens…. I wholeheartedly agree… the extra $100 is a bargain price for this lens… It is almost (and I do say almost) like having a tripod. I set the camera for 1/10th second exposures with no support, and obtained steady pictures with it, slower than this, and the stabilization did not fully correct for any unsteadiness.

We’d buy it again in a heartbeat, and I wish I could get one for everyone I know!! Best photos that I have ever taken and a joy to use! Connecting it to the computer and downloading photos takes a matter of seconds.

Get the largest SD card you can afford with it… We have a 2GB card with it, and it fills fairly rapidly. 1GB is far too small for this camera (primarily because you will take numerous shots with it, not because the pics take up a great deal of memory), I’m guessing 4GB would be near perfect (or a couple of 2GB cards, but one 4GB is safer, the cards are too easy to misplace).

2. I’m a professional photographer. I shoot editorials and advertising. I own a couple Canon 1Ds Mark 3. That being said, I wanted a small compact camera to take around with me. I first purchased a Sigma DP-1, but found it limiting and too slow. I sold it and decided to purchase the Canon 450D (XSi). And I am simply amazed at the functionality and speedy feel of the camera. Yes, it’s not as small as a DP-1, but compared to a 1Ds Mark 3, it’s tiny. Every feature of this camera is well thought out and they loaded it with much current technology as possible. I can’t think of a single thing to complain about. I see people complaining about the buffer, but honestly if you NEED high buffer on RAW shooting then take the plunge and buy a 1D or 1Ds.

It’s not a professional grade camera by functionality and build. But the image quality is on par. sRAW on a 1Ds Mark 3 is precisely the same as this camera MP size. I would feel very comfortable with the image quality of this camera to do a editorial shoot (non-sport) with it. But of course, the client always wants to see the big expensive camera, since they’re paying you.

What says about this camera:

1. I also own a Sony A700 but it is a big camera to lug around all the time. I wanted something small that I could throw in my purse to carry all the time. This camera is wonderful. I get great shots in all kinds of light, the pictures are clear, close-ups are amazing, it’s fast and the battery lasts a long time. The only thing that I would change to make it even better, is more optical zoom.

2. I was looking for a smaller camera that would take good quality pictures, especially on trips. I take college students abroad for a month in Costa Rica and wanted to be able to do a blog with lots of pictures to record their experiences. This camera far exceeded my expectations! It is extremely simple to operate. I have been able to figure out features that are new to me on the fly without having to refer to the manual. Particularly impressive to me are the video capabilities and the high sensitivity / low light with no flash setting. I have been able to take excellent shots in dark museums where no flash is allowed and have been able to upload good-quality videos to the blog. The software that comes with the camera works well and is very user-friendly. The 4X optical zoom is not powerful enough to take fine nature photographs from great distances, but it is good enough to zoom in to compose a picture for most general purposes. All in all, I highly recommend this camera, especially for travel.

What says about this camera:

1.” Wonderful little camera! It takes beautiful, clear pictures, even in low light. Also, the macro setting is wonderful. I took some test shots of tulips and they were just beautiful! Even on an overcast day!”
2.” Bought this for my 9 year old daughter and it seems to be a good value. Had some trouble getting it to power up at one point and found that it didn’t work well on regular alkaline AA batteries and had to get Kodak’s batteries. Overall a good lower end camera.”

What says about this camera:
1.”I was attracted to this camera as a new version of the A460, which was highly rated by PC World. It is indeed very simple to use with a large LCD display, much greater resolution than the A70 I bought five years ago, and uses a 2 GB memory chip. The drawback is that the camera has no view finder. You take a picture by looking at it in the LCD display. That works fine indoors, but outdoors the daylight washes out the display so that framing a picture is almost guesswork.”
2.”I bought this camera for my 14 year old son to take on school trips. His previous camera from another manufacturer lasted barely six months and took mediocre photos. This camera however is awesome! The pictures are sharp, perfectly exposed and the camera is really simple to use. Seems the menus are designed for regular people to understand. He appreciated that a lot.
The bottom line is he had one day to learn how to use the camera and then spent a week in Boston with his class. His photos were great and his camera experience was excellent…and I didn’t break the bank for to purchase it either ”

What says about this camera:

1.” I have had many digital cameras.
For the price this is a great little light weight camera.”

2.”This was purchased to replace another digital camera that was broken. The key feature sought was the large LCD screen. The features of this camera surpassed our expectations. This camera is used primarily for online auction photos of clothing and jewelry. The close up photos are very good quality. It downloads the photos to the computer in about 1/2 the time of the previously used camera. The zoom is not as strong as the previous camera, but for the intended use it works perfectly. The memory card purchased was significantly lower in price than for the other camera. Very nice product for the price.”

What says about this camera:

1.”I am thrilled with this camera that I bought for my 6 year old daughter. It takes great pictures even in automatic mode and shoots quality videos as well. One thing that is not working by some reason is face recognition. There is a button for this but I was never able to get it to work. Maybe it’s just defective item or maybe it’s flaw in the design, not sure, but otherwise the camera is a winner. It is very easy to change it’s resolution on a fly. Good ergonomics, easy to use menus.”

2.”I bought this camera two days before leaving on vacation, knowing I wanted something compact and easy to use. It was perfect! After 2 weeks of mountains and prairies, scenic overlooks and family visits, I plugged my camera into the computer and uploaded nearly 200 amazing pictures. It works well both inside and out, in bright sun or overcast. It’s small enough to carry in a purse or pocket, and so far appears pretty durable. Even my kids were able to take pictures without cutting off the people’s heads! I think this is an excellent camera, especially when the sale price drops it below $100.”

What says about this camera:

1.”I bought this camera for wife so she would have small camera to carry around with her on vacation. While the pictures it takes will never be mistaken for pics taken with a DSLR, the results are generally very good. It’s also very simple to use. If you’re the type of person that is going to “pixel peep”, or be upset about “noise” at a high ISO, then this probably isn’t the camera for you. Then again, no camera for around $100 is going to make you happy. If you want an inexpensive, small camera to just take pictures, then this camera is an excellent choice. It’s a small, no-frills, to the point, point and shoot. It also seems very well built, and the 2.5″ screen is acceptable for a camera at this price. The camera itself probably rates about 4 stars, but I give it 5 stars at its price point. ”

2.”I was pretty impressed with this camera from the start, its got a pretty small design so it wont get in the way. The quality of the pictures are really good, and the camera does a good job of determining lighting conditions for the auto flash. One of the best features of the camera is its ability to take clear shots of moving objects, I’ve taken pictures of people moving as well as taken shots from cars on the road and the picture remains clear with little or no blurring. Great camera for the price I’d recommend it to anyone looking for a 8.2 mp digital camera thats light and portable but takes great pictures.”
